Skin can look polished and still feel uneven up close. Pores become more noticeable, fine lines hold their shape longer, old scars catch the light, and areas of mild laxity stop responding to skincare the way they once did. Microneedling addresses these changes by creating a controlled repair response beneath the skin’s surface. At Azar Plastic Surgery in Thousand Oaks, we use Cutera Secret RF, pairing microneedling with radiofrequency energy for deeper collagen remodeling.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled channels in the skin. These microinjuries prompt the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, gradually improving scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven skin texture.
This form of dermal microneedling doesn’t remove layers of skin. Instead, thin needles enter at a selected depth while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. As the skin heals, collagen production increases and irregular areas begin to remodel.
Microneedling at a Glance
We use microneedling for skin concerns tied to irregular collagen, scar tissue, and gradual changes in texture. It can improve:
Microneedling works best when the concern sits within the skin itself. It won’t replace skin removal, surgery, or laser resurfacing when laxity or sun damage is more advanced. During your consultation, we’ll look closely at the skin and determine whether collagen remodeling is likely to create the change you’re after.
We frequently treat the cheeks for acne scars and enlarged pores, though microneedling can also improve fine lines around the mouth, roughness across the forehead, and mild laxity along the lower face.
We may also treat the neck and décolletage when the skin looks thin or crepey. These areas need careful settings because the skin behaves differently than it does on the cheeks.
On the body, we can use microneedling for selected stretch marks and scars on the abdomen, hips, thighs, and other areas. We adjust the depth based on skin thickness, the age of the scar, and how the tissue responds.
During treatment, we pass a microneedling device across the skin while sterile needles create controlled channels at a selected depth. Those channels start a repair response without broadly removing the skin’s surface.
The process develops in stages:
We don’t use the same depth across every area. Deeper acne scars may call for longer needles, while thinner skin around the mouth or neck needs a more measured approach. That level of control separates professional microneedling from at-home rollers and cosmetic devices.
Microneedling supports gradual change rather than creating a dramatic surface effect overnight. As the skin produces more collagen, patients may notice:
The benefit depends on the concern. A patient treating acne scars may notice that makeup sits more evenly. Someone treating the neck may see less creasing when turning the head. The change develops gradually as the skin rebuilds.
RF microneedling combines tiny needles with radiofrequency energy. Once the needles reach the selected deeper layers, the device delivers controlled thermal energy beneath the skin’s surface.
At Azar Plastic Surgery, we use Cutera Secret RF as our primary microneedling device. It allows us to adjust both needle depth and energy based on the treatment area, skin type, and concern.
We may recommend RF microneedling when fine lines, acne scars, enlarged pores, or uneven texture appear alongside mild laxity. It won’t create the degree of lifting associated with surgery, but it can support firmer-looking skin through deeper collagen remodeling.
Secret RF and SkinPen both create controlled microchannels, but Secret RF also delivers radiofrequency energy.
| Feature | Secret RF | SkinPen |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Microneedling with RF energy | Mechanical microneedling without heat |
| Best suited for | Texture, scars, pores, and mild laxity | Acne scars, fine lines, and texture |
| Customization | Needle depth and RF energy | Needle depth |
| Intensity | More intensive | Gentler |
| Downtime | Commonly several days | Commonly shorter |
| Collagen response | Mechanical and thermal | Mechanical |
Secret RF may make sense when the skin needs a deeper remodeling response. SkinPen may be a better fit when the concern is more superficial or when a patient prefers microneedling without thermal energy.
You may be a good candidate for microneedling if your skin is healthy and your concern can reasonably improve through collagen remodeling. We commonly recommend it for acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and mild loss of firmness.
We may postpone treatment if you have:
Tell us about your medical conditions, medications, prior cosmetic treatments, and any tendency toward pigment changes. We can treat darker skin tones, but the settings and aftercare still need to account for the risk of post-inflammatory discoloration.
Keep the skin calm before your appointment. Avoid tanning and sunburn, and follow our instructions to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C, or other products that can cause irritation.
Let us know about recent chemical peels, laser resurfacing, active breakouts, cold sores, and medications that affect healing. Arrive with clean skin and plan around a few days of redness afterward.
We begin by cleansing the skin and mapping the treatment areas. We’ll then apply a topical numbing cream and give it time to work before we start.
Once the skin is numb, we choose the needle depth and, for Secret RF, the radiofrequency settings. We then move the device methodically across the treatment area.
You may still feel pressure, warmth, or prickling, particularly over thinner or more sensitive areas. The procedure takes place in our medical office, and you’ll return home shortly afterward.
Microneedling generally has minimal downtime. You’ll likely experience redness, warmth, and minor swelling during the first day. Some patients also notice bruising, dryness, or light flaking as the skin heals.
These effects typically subside within several days. A stronger RF microneedling treatment can produce redness or moderate swelling for up to five days.
Use gentle skincare and sunscreen while the surface settles. We’ll also ask you to avoid strenuous exercise, pools, saunas, hot showers, and direct sun for a short period. You can usually return to makeup once the skin is intact and our team gives you the go-ahead.
Don’t apply platelet-rich plasma, strong serums, vitamin C, exfoliants, or other active products to freshly treated skin unless we’ve specifically included them in your plan.
Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, sensitivity, and mild acne flares can occur. Less common risks include infection, pigment changes, burns, scarring, or unwanted tissue changes after overly aggressive RF treatment. Contact our office if pain or redness gets worse instead of better, or if you notice signs of infection.
Microneedling results take time because collagen production doesn’t happen all at once. Early swelling can make the skin look temporarily smoother, but the more meaningful changes develop later.
You may notice early improvement in skin texture within several weeks. Collagen continues to develop over the following months, and RF microneedling results may take three to six months to become fully visible.
Most patients need a series to reach their desired results. Three to six treatments are common, though deeper acne scars or stretch marks may require additional sessions. We’ll base the plan on how your skin responds rather than assigning the same number to everyone.
The collagen created after microneedling can support smoother skin and improved texture for months. Your skin will still continue to age, and sun exposure can gradually affect collagen, tone, and firmness.
Some patients schedule maintenance treatments after completing their initial series. Daily sunscreen and a consistent skincare routine can help protect the improvement between visits.
Microneedling can fit into a broader treatment plan when texture is only one part of the concern.
Injectables address movement or volume, while microneedling works within the skin. Chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and light treatments may help when pigment or redness also needs attention. We can also recommend medical-grade skincare once the skin is ready for active ingredients again.

Where some patients need microneedling, others may benefit from chemical peels, laser resurfacing, injectables, or a surgical option. At Azar Plastic Surgery, we choose the device and settings based on the tissue responsible for the concern. We don’t use the exact same treatment plan on every patient.of skin. Instead, thin needles enter at a selected depth while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. As the skin heals, collagen production increases and irregular areas begin to remodel.
Schedule a consultation at Azar Plastic Surgery in Thousand Oaks to discuss acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture, stretch marks, or early laxity. We’ll evaluate your skin and determine whether Secret RF, SkinPen, or another treatment better fits your goals and recovery preferences.
Microneedling pricing reflects the device we use, the treatment area, the depth of treatment, and the number of sessions we recommend. We’ll provide an accurate quote after evaluating your skin.
We apply numbing cream before treatment. You may still feel pressure, warmth, or prickling, particularly during RF microneedling.
Yes. Microneedling can soften selected acne scars by stimulating collagen and remodeling irregular tissue. The type and depth of the scar will affect the result.
We can perform microneedling on darker skin tones. Careful settings and sun protection matter because inflammation can trigger temporary or lasting pigment changes.
Most patients begin with three to six sessions. Deeper scars, stretch marks, and more advanced texture concerns may need a longer plan.
Microneedling has been studied for certain forms of hair loss, but scalp treatment requires a separate medical evaluation and protocol.
You’ll need to leave makeup off while the skin is irritated or open. Many patients return to makeup after the first day, though stronger treatments may require more time.
You may notice early texture changes within several weeks. Collagen production continues afterward, and the full result may take three to six months to develop.
