Breast implant removal aims to remove or replace implants that have been placed in the chest during a breast augmentation or breast reconstruction procedure.

Implants are often removed after ten to fifteen years for safety. The implants can either be replaced or removed for good. If the implant is removed, scar tissue will also be excised. Whatever your aesthetic goal, Dr. Azar will work delicately with an eye for detail so as to achieve natural-appearing results.

Allergan Breast Implant Recall

On July 24, Allergan recalled Biocell textured breast implants and tissue expanders. It is important to note that these were the only devices recalled. While cases are still rare, the FDA noted a correlation between these devices and the development of BIA-ALCL . BIA-ALCL is a rare type of lymphoma that is treatable.

The risk of developing BIA-ALCL remains very low and the FDA does not recommend removing these implants unless you are experiencing symptoms such as lumps, swelling, collected fluid in the breasts, changes in breast shape or pain. If you are experiencing these symptoms we recommend scheduling a breast exam so that you can determine your next steps. Dr. Azar specializes in breast augmentation procedures and can safely and skillfully remove implants if necessary.

Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

Breast implants are removed for a number of reasons. It is important to remember that each woman has a personal reason to remove her implants. We respect that and will work with you to achieve your desired outcome and provide the care you deserve throughout the various steps of the process. Breast implant removal reasons include:

Older Implants

This includes implants that are within ten to fifteen years old. Implants should be removed and/or replaced to ensure your health and best appearance.

Capsular Contracture

Your body works hard to keep you healthy. When a foreign object like an implant is introduced to your body, your immune system may work to create a sac of scar tissue around it so it’s isolated from the rest of your body. This may cause your breast to be harder than before or shift in position. Dr. Azar can remove the implant and scar tissue to help your breasts look and feel natural again.

Breast Implant Illness

We encourage patients to see their primary doctor if they have any of the symptoms associated with breast implant illness. Some women are concerned they have breast implant illness. This concern derives from the belief that the silicon products are causing low energy, memory loss, low libido, headaches, rashes, IBS, restless sleep and many other symptoms. However, there is no way for medical professionals to test if a patient has breast implant illness.

Additional Reading

If a patient is suspected of having breast implant illness, the implants will be removed enbloc. Enbloc is a surgical procedure that prevents contamination. In this surgery, the implant, including the capsule of tissue around it, is removed in one piece. This technique requires the hand of a gifted and detail-oriented surgeon, like Dr. Azar. Dr. Azar wants his patients to be healthy and will help you determine if breast implant removal is the best choice for your health.

Implant Leak Or Rupture

Implant leaks and ruptures do not occur often but require the removal of the implant and fluid if the implant structure is put at risk. Once the implant and liquid is removed, Dr. Azar and you can make a plan for how to achieve your ideal aesthetic.

Appearance

Over the years you may grow to desire a different breast appearance. This can be due to many factors including a loss of natural breast tissue. If you are bothered by the appearance of your breasts, implants can be removed or replaced to help you achieve a natural look that you love. Whatever your reason, Dr. Azar will happily determine a treatment plan that takes your health and anatomical features into consideration.

This technology lets you see how your breasts will look without implants or with different implants with impressive accuracy. The 3D system allows both you and Dr. Azar to choose the implants that will provide your best appearance.

When Should I Consider Breast Implant Removal?

A good candidate for breast implant removal includes women who are healthy and within their ideal weight range. Ideally they will be a non-smoker or be able to stop smoking for a few weeks before and after treatment.

Women who are concerned for their health or who have undergone an examination and found a complication caused by the implant should also have implants removed. These concerns may start off as discomfort, hardening of the breasts, or the feeling that the breasts are becoming heavy. If you experience any of these symptoms, we encourage you to reach out to a doctor for an exam. Although it may be nothing, we want our patients to be and feel healthy. The patient should have realistic expectations of what the outcome of breast implant removal will be. Dr. Azar will inform patients of the expected outcome and show them before and after photos of breast implant replacement and removal procedures.

Personal Consultation

During your private meeting with Dr. Azar, he will assess your implants and determine the best course of action.

This will include a physical examination of the breasts and asking about your current health and medications. Together, you will decide if the implants should be removed entirely or replaced. If you wish to remove the implants, Dr. Azar may perform a breast lift to keep your chest looking young and healthy. A breast lift is a common procedure to combine with a breast reduction. Losing tissue or an implant may deflate the breasts. A lift will allow the breasts to retain a natural appearance.

Surgery Preparation

Preparing for the Procedure

How you prepare for your implant removal surgery will be similar to how you prepared when the implants were first placed. You will need to take a week or so off from work. Thousand Oaks breast implant removal provider, Dr. Azar, will inform you of the estimated downtime in your consultation. On average, patients require about a week of downtime from a sedentary job. More physically-demanding jobs will require a longer downtime. Arrange for rides to and from the appointment as well as ask a friend to stay with you for the first few days of recovery. Having someone around to help with movement and keep you company is a big help to many of our patients. Adjusting medications may be necessary to make sure the surgery and recovery go well.

Additional Reading

No alcohol should be consumed within forty-eight hours of surgery. You will also need to fast for twelve hours before surgery to ensure you have a positive transition from your surgery to the beginning of your recovery. The morning of surgery, we encourage patients to take a shower since they won’t be able to for a few days. Dress in comfortable, loose fitting clothes that can be easily removed and won’t apply pressure to the chest. Arriving a few minutes early to the appointment will help you feel less rushed and give us time to make sure you are fully prepared for the procedure.

Breast Implant Removal Procedure

looking flattering and natural

Your procedure will be performed by Dr. Azar and will take about one to three hours. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and may be covered in part by insurance depending on the circumstances. Dr. Azar will place incisions along the previously-created lines that were used to place the implants. He may need to create additional incisions and will inform you of this during your consultation. Through these incisions, Dr. Azar will remove the implants, scar tissue and any leaked liquid if necessary. Additional techniques may be used to keep your chest looking flattering and natural.
