What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the clinical term for chronic excessive sweating. With this disorder, sweating is not related to the body trying to keep itself cool through the normal temperature regulation process. Sweat is usually a byproduct of energy exertion and overheating. In the case of hyperhidrosis, however, these may not be the contributing factors to excessive sweating. Rather, the eccrine sweat glands may be hyperstimulated, biologically, causing the unwanted reaction. To be diagnosed with this condition, a patient must experience excessive sweating for at least 6 months at a time, usually caused by an unknown or nonspecific trigger. In addition, the patient must meet at least 2 of several additional specific criteria, such as daily functional impairment due to sweating, family history of hyperhidrosis, and/or experiencing excessive sweating prior to age 25. For many patients, the condition is focal, meaning it may be localized to the underarms, palms of the hands, and/or soles of the feet.

How can Botox help with excessive sweating?

Botox is a household name when it comes to cosmetic enhancement and the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Lesser known, is the compound’s ability to reduce sweating in the underarms. Botox is FDA-approved to treat severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Botox for sweating works by preventing the release of acetylcholine, which, in turn, prevents the overstimulation of the eccrine sweat glands. Studies have found that Botox is very effective in the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis as it shows significant improvement in this condition.

Preparing for Your Hyperhidrosis Treatment Appointment

To prepare for your Hyperhidrosis Treatment appointment, you will be instructed to not apply any deodorants or antiperspirants to your underarms for at least 24 hours prior to your session. You will also need to shave the treatment area prior to coming into the office.

Botox for Sweating Procedure

Once you come into the office for your Botox treatment, Dr. Azar will review the plan for your procedure and cleanse the treatment area. As the Botox must be placed precisely to help reduce sweating, he will mark the injection sites on your underarms with a surgical marker. From there, a topical anesthetic will be applied to your skin.

This is to help you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Azar will then inject the Botox solution into your armpit, carefully following the grid-like pattern marked onto your skin. Since the Botox is to affect the nerves responsible for stimulating the sweat glands, the Botox injections will be administered just under the skin. This is different from the cosmetic application of Botox for wrinkles on the face. Botox Cosmetic is injected directly into the facial muscles which requires a deeper injection. Once administration of Botox is complete, your skin will be cleaned once more and you will be able to resume your normal activity for the day.
