Everyone who is on a quest for a more slender, fit body has probably run into obstacles along the way. Most of those obstacles can be overcome by continuing to work toward your goal, but some fat bulges refuse to budge.
Dr. Azar provides a nonsurgical solution, CoolSculpting, at our Thousand Oaks practice near Westlake Village. CoolSculpting uses a process called cryolipolysis to minimize pockets of unwanted fat, providing effective, lasting results.
It’s a technique loved by Hollywood because the results look natural–not like you’ve had “work done”–and there’s no downtime. Celebs like Debra Messing, Khloe Kardashian and Molly Sims all swear by their results, so maybe it’s time for you to explore CoolSculpting.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?
Researchers in 2007 discovered that when you expose fat cells to very cold temperatures, they freeze and die. When the fat cells are frozen, the body’s natural inflammatory response kicks in and releases special cells that naturally digest the dead fat cells. The lipids from the cells are also eliminated, flushed out through the lymphatic system.
Exposing target fat deposits will cause fat cells to die. Your body will metabolize them naturally and leave you with a slimmer, toned body.
This discovery laid the groundwork for developing the technology utilized in the CoolSculpting procedure. Fat cells die when exposed to a specific freezing temperature range, reducing subcutaneous fat in the areas targeted. This is accomplished with no damage to skin or other surrounding tissues. The FDA approved CoolSculpting for use in the U.S. in 2010, and it has since become an extremely popular choice for nonsurgical fat reduction and body contouring.
Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical, non-invasive procedure that requires no anesthesia, no incisions, and no recovery time. Both procedures address various areas of excess fat, but the results of liposuction are visible immediately after surgery. CoolSculpting is a gradual process.
Depending on your needs and aesthetic goals, Dr. Azar can help you decide if CoolSculpting is going to give you the end result you desire.
The CoolSculpting Procedure
When you visit Dr. Azar’s office for a CoolSculpting treatment, you will begin by getting comfortable in the treatment room while we prepare the CoolSculpting applicators. The applicators come in several sizes and are designed specifically for the areas you wish to address, including:
- Under the chin
- Under the buttocks
- Fat around the bra area
- Back fat
We place gel pads on the skin for additional protection, and then place the CoolSculpting applicator on the pad. A gentle vacuum suction draws the targeted fat pocket up into the hollow tip of the applicator, where the cooling begins. You may feel some slight tugging and a bit of a cold sensation initially, but this resolves as the temperature drops and numbs the skin.
A CoolSculpting session typically takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the size of the area treated, and how many areas are being treated. You can relax, rest, and even nap during your session, as most people find the treatment easy to tolerate.
Once the treatment is complete, our professionally trained Coolsculpting technician removes the applicator. You can resume your normal activities with no restrictions. Side effects, if any, are mild and are only temporary. They include minor skin sensitivities at the treatment area–redness, bruising, swelling–but these are normal and resolve quickly.
Because CoolSculpting relies on the body’s natural response to process dead fat cells, you won’t see immediate results after your treatment. Many people require more than 1 treatment session; it depends on your specific needs, and our office will let you know prior to your first session what we recommend.
Some patients notice results around 3 weeks after their first treatment, but it typically takes 1 to 3 months to see more visible results. It can take up to 6 months for your body to completely flush out the affected fat cells. Once the body flushes out fat cells they do not return, providing that you maintain a healthy weight.
