Preparation

Prior to surgery for breast implants Thousand Oaks patients will need to prepare to take a week off from work. Fill prescriptions and arrange for rides to and from your appointment. Designate an area of your home for recovery. Make sure this area has plenty of blankets, pillows, and entertainment. Ask a friend to spend the first few days of recovery with you as you adjust to movement after surgery. For your best surgery and recovery, follow Dr. Azar’s instructions. Feel free to call our office with any last minute questions or concerns. We will advise you on the optimal diet, vitamins and supplement to take and which ones to avoid. Refrain from smoking for at least one month before and after surgery. We want you to be confident in your choice and look forward to giving you the best result!

Breast Implant Procedure

Dr. Azar performs breast enlargement surgery on an outpatient basis, our Ambulatory surgery center to provide a safe environment. A board-certified anesthesiologist will be present to make sure you are comfortable. The whole procedure takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. During breast implant surgery, an incision is made along the breast crease or along the areola as well. The location of the incision will be decided upon between you and Dr. Azar at the consultation. Incision placements will differ between each patient based on their aesthetic goals.

Dr. Azar will work delicately and place scars in discrete locations.

Once the incision(s) has been made, the breast will be prepared for the implant. Most implants are placed below the pectoral muscle. Subpectoral implant placement will help the augmentation appear natural. The implant may be placed on top of the pectoral muscle if there is enough breast tissue to cover the implant and achieve the patient’s desired outcome. Dr. Azar places his implants using a “no-touch’ technique where the implant is protected from touching your skin or anything else with the use of a Keller funnel, a special sterile plastic funnel which aids in quick and clean insertion of the implant. Once the implants have been diligently placed, Dr. Azar will finish up the procedure, close incisions and apply bandages.

Complementary Procedures

Breast implant surgery is often combined with a breast lift. A breast lift will rejuvenate the chest and return it to a younger, perkier position. Every woman will have a unique recovery experience. The important thing is to rest, stay hydrated and take your recovery one day at a time. Your breasts will be sore and swollen for a few days. Pain medication will control discomfort and allow you to rest peacefully. A follow-up appointment will allow Dr. Azar to change bandages, remove drains, and answer any new questions. For patients that would like to minimize the use of narcotic pain medicine, Dr. Azar may recommend the use of an injectable pain medicine during your surgery that lasts 3 days called Exparel. This is optional. Most patients can return to work within a week and begin exercising after about three weeks.
