Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition where the male breast is enlarged by excess glandular tissue. It may affect only one breast or both. Although gynecomastia is a fairly common condition, it is rarely discussed.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that 20,280 men had plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia in 2007. Gynecomastia may be caused by a number of factors including obesity, genetic disorders, hormonal imbalances and chronic liver disease. Significant weight loss may resolve gynecomastia for men who are overweight, but most often surgery is the only viable solution.

The Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Dr. Azar can successfully treat gynecomastia with surgical male breast reduction. Depending on the needs of the patient, Dr. Azar may perform liposuction alone to remove excess fat or combine liposuction with a scalpel technique to excise glandular tissue as well as any excess fatty tissue.Gynecomastia.jpg

The procedure is performed by making an incision either around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) or under the arm. For men seeking treatment of gynecomastia, Dr. Azar offers confidential consultations and individualized treatment plans at his office in Thousand Oaks.
