Ear Sculpting (Otoplasty)

Ears that are especially large or protruding can have a negative impact on a person's self-esteem. Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can change the size and shape of ears for people of all ages, making overly large ears smaller or placing protruding ears closer to the head. Otoplasty is most commonly performed on children between the ages of four and 14.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty begins with an incision behind the ear. Excess cartilage is then removed, and the remaining cartilage is sutured into place and left to heal. Ear surgery takes about two to three hours, and is done on an outpatient basis. Most normal activities can be resumed in five to seven days, and strenuous activities in about one to two months. Ear sculpting is highly effective at improving an individual's appearance and self-confidence.
